I'm happy that you are back but I would contend that your thesis can be applied more broadly. Enlightenment/power/vitality is derived from lay people entering into any demanding arena (religion, politics, etc) only for the love of the effort to improve the community and not any measureable self-interested outcome. In return, community acceptance of a lay person's efforts are in large part due to respect for that self-sacrificing effort. Acceptance of the effort comes if the effort provides value to the community. However, in the end, that vitality/power attracts the Adminstrative Professionals that are to bring order and focus to the effort. These professionals are the contamination that results in decline (religion, politics, etc). As with Professional ministers counting heads or financials become metrics they can measure, whereas the original lay minister had only a community metric that could not be measured directly but was of more value in the end. The eventual failure of these professionals as a result of a lack of respect and acceptance by the community seems to escape them as they cry about what is wrong. Sorry for the length but you struck a nerve that extends even to my profession.
