Mea culpa, mea culpa.
Between work duties yesterday I watched thirty minutes of the Fiasco in Amarillo, II. In this episode, which should be titled, The Impotent Strike Back, the Amarillo Convention Center* functions as the Death Star, with the BGCT as Endor.
I actually staggered for a moment during one of the speeches. It was like a gigantic number of people cried out as one and then went silent. The gigantic number, of course, would be the masses who no longer affiliate with the BGCT but still feel some sympathy for their plight.
Here is a recap of what I heard, at least as to the problem issues:
- Apparently, there was a small gathering called a convention in McAllen last year. Apparently, some are just hearing about the convention in McAllen. Apparently, the seven or eight people who voted in McAllen put forward some constitutional amendments, backed by the seven, eight or ten university presidents (the chair was not sure how many they have, so the speakers cannot be punished for their confusion; they will be; but what can you do?). I say some are just now learning about all this because the main objection(s) raised by speakers was that they had not had time to think about it all. One nice lady on the platform said it had been up on the website for two weeks and I believe her. I really do. **
- Then, a fellow asked what the presidents of the various schools thought. Two could be found and offered their thoughts. Their thoughts were the things I have said for about, oh, fifteen years, publicly, so I am glad to receive this kind of confirmation. Now, I wish they would go change their charters legally, so the poor people who actually travel to these remote spots (Next Year's Location: Pluto-The Dark Side) will not have to sit though all this mess.
- One of the presidents courageously announced what eveyone in the room knew.*** The BGCT has lost so many churches and so many key leaders who were in BGCT churches are now in SBTC churches that it is difficult to fill out the schools' trustee boards with people who actually matter. The fact a fellow is pastor of a fine church like FBC, Leveland, for instance, may not mean he can actually handle high office. Oh, wait a minute.
- The decreasing stipend the convention can send to the schools does not match the continued massive oversight the convention still wants, living as it does safely back in the past, where it was the one and only body in its own state, unlike today when it is mostly a body lying in state.
Well, I told you I only lasted about a half hour.
There were some good points. Gary Cook's speech in gracious reply from a floor microphone was the best dose of understated reality I have heard at a convention since back when Mr. Lincoln said, "We may have some troubles down South."
For a hard hitting, accurate, journalistic portrayal of the rest of the convention, you can turn to...to...pretty much no one.
Have a nice Tuesday.
Opinions expressed here are mine alone.
*In fairness, the Amarillo Convention Center is a nice place and they let the BGCT use it for free. Free is good, even better when you are broke.
**In fairness, the nice lady who said the amendments were up on the website for two weeks could also have added, "Seriously, guys, even Rick Davis knows about these amendments and he don't come to nothin' no more."
***In fairness, the two university presidents who spoke to the amendment motion are the two most venerated veterans. Their word should carry some weight. If you ask someone what they think and they tell you and then tell you they have been dealing with this reality for fifteen years, seriously, isn't it about time to listen to people who actually have to deal with the truth?
I don't know how this works south of the Red River, but up here in OBU-land, the BGCO appoints every last one of the Trustees and supplies a KINGLY 5% of OBU's budget each and every year.
Who said the folks in ZERO land were misers?

Only-One-Ken-Employme,
It is true, the farce is with us. There is no hope.
-------
Maybe we can go back to the prequel. But then we would have to put up with the rise of David Currie. I would prefer to just sit back and watch the farce and its dark side.
